Henk Wijnen and Wim van Sijl have their own artistic practice in which they work with multiple collaborations over many years.

Wijnen and Van Sijl’s have often worked together and exchanged ideas and assisted one another, for example in international group exhibitions.

Their first artistic collaboration as a duo took place in 1982.

From 1995 to 2005 they formed a three-man collaboration with Willem G.Wevers under the name de3Heren.

The initial idea of working on a Schutterstuk (Militia piece) arose in 2000 when they sought to create a 17th century ambiance for a photographic group portrait for their work Fijne Configuraties (Fine Configurations).

HISTORY

From 2006 to 2010, Wijnen and Van Sijl collaborated with Hugo Boxhoorn and Nico Scholten under the name Uit De Verzameling Van.

This collaboration conducted further study and visual research on the Schutterstuk (Militia piece) genre and group portraits.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION OF THE MONUMENT OF MANKIND

The project Monument of Mankind originated in 2011 when Wijnen and Van Sijl exhibited their various collaborations in their exhibition Kunstenaars in Samenwerking & Het Nieuwe Schuttersstuk (Artists in Collaboration & The New Militia piece) in Stadsmuseum IJsselstein.

During this exhibition they realized several group portraits in which they themselves were present.

The works shown in the history below are made by one photo shot.

After the project Fijne Configuraties a new project arose in which the mushroom became a subject. The project was called Blije Werken (Happy Works) in which metaphors and symbols were incorporated into photos, videos and an emblem.
